Jane Koler and Richard Sanders bring over 40 years of experience practicing property and land use law.
For the past 40 years, she has represented businesses and individuals interfacing with the government; she helps businesses and individuals obtain all types of zoning and land use permits, assists individuals facing government compliance and penalty actions and represents individuals with property disputes about easements, boundaries, and ownership obtained through adverse possession. She also obtains licenses for all types of business enterprises. Ms. Koler frequently challenges arbitrary requirements associated with government compliance and land use permitting. See Guimont v. Clark, 121 Wn.2d 586 (Washington Supreme Court invalidated state law imposing mobile home relocation fee on developer); Berst v. Snohomish County, 114 Wn. App. 245 (Forest Practices Act penalty moritorium invalidated because it violated due process).
Jane Koler graduated from Whitman College and then got her M.A. from the University of Washington in Art History. She graduated from Seattle University Law School cum laude and clerked at the Court of Appeals before going to work at Casey & Pruzan, a boutique real estate firm in Seattle, Washington. She worked there for 15 years where she was a partner. She opened her own law office in 2001. Her practice has always focused exclusively on land use permitting, government enforcement and penalty actions, and real property issues as well as real estate issues.
Jane koler has practiced before…many different…Washington State administrative tribunals, superior courts, the Court of Appeals Division I and II, and the Washington State Supreme Court. She has also been admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the United States District Court Western District of Washington, and the United States Court…for the…Western District. Because Jane Koler has recognized expertise in the field of land use, she has been asked to speak at numerous continuing education conferences for attorneys.
Callan Johns graduated from the University of New Orleans in 2015 with a background in Marketing and Management. She attended Loyola University of New Orleans College of Law and participated in the Moot Court Program, Loyola Law Clinic, and was a member of the Loyola Maritime Law Journal where she is published in the Winter 2019 Edition. Callan began her legal career interning at the Pro Bono Project where she assisted indigent populations of the greater New Orleans…with…child custody…and divorce…issues. In 2018, she began working for the Law Office of Glenn McGovern as a law clerk. She became an associate attorney at that firm after graduating from law school. As an attorney, Callan began her legal career specializing in civil rights and personal injury. Since moving to Washington in 2023, Callan has focused her practice on land use and property law.
Richard B. Sanders was elected to the Washington Supreme Court in 1995. During his 26 years of legal practice prior to becoming a Justice of the Supreme Court, Richard Sanders litigated more than 100 appeals (no fewer than 60 of which resulted in published opinions). When sitting on the Supreme Court, he became one of its most prolific authors and is recognized nationally for his published opinions and other writings. Mr. Sanders received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Washington after participating in the political science honors program. He thereafter earned his J.D. in 1969 from the University of Washington School of Law. Mr. Sanders has served as an adjunct professor teaching appellate advocacy at the UW School of Law; has written articles for professional journals and texts; and has presented lectures to local, state, and national organizations on diverse topics, including civil liberties, land use, and the Washington State Constitution, among others.
Before becoming a Supreme Court Justice, Richard Sanders litigated landmark cases against the City of Seattle involving the taking of private property. He was one of the first Washington Attorneys to assert damage actions against government agencies in land use cases based on 42 USC Section 1983.
